What is a name? Is it a symbol of good luck, or merely a group of letters? In my opinion, a name is represented by one’s identity, or one’s unbreakable, inchangable passions. My passion is music. When I wake up everyday, Beethoven’s eighth piano Sonata runs in my head, like an alarm clock setting me up for the day. When I do my homework, Schubert’s ninth Symphony surrounds me, helping me to focus on my work. Music has almost become a part of me, and it shapes every little thing I do. Therefore, my artifact is a short musical piece written in the shape of my name.
From a broad perspective, my piece is written in D-minor, and along with the fast tempo, the piece creates a dance-like mood. But when a minor key which often lowers the happiness of a song is put into a piece of such a lively mood, a great contrast is created. This contrast symbolizes my optimistic beliefs about things - that despite the enviornment, no matter how much despair there seems to be, I always find the good in things.
Examining the composition from a vertical perspective, you may notice that the piece is also full of contrast in complexity, too. The first bar consisting of L and U has only one voice - if this composition was a story, then the first bar would be the exposition. This voice represents the outgoing me, without any worries or disturbance, or the Normal Lucas.
Then, everything changes; a second, higher voice suddenly interrupts the rhythm of the first in the letter “C,” bringing a difficult challenge that the Normal Lucas will have to face. In the letter “A,” the second voice completely disrupts the melody of the first and the music turns to an interrupted set of A notes of different octaves. This new voice represents me under pressure, or the “Anxious Lucas.”
These two letters would make up the rising action of the story. Next, right after the rising action comes the letter “S;” twice the length of the other letters and three times as complex, it is the action and emotion-packed climax of the story. A third, lower voice comes in, and tries to stablize to situation by pulling the Normal Lucas’ voice further down. This third voice is the Heroic Lucas, which represents the opposing side of the Anxious Lucas.
The climax is the most complex part of this compostion, and it portrays a battle between the Hero Lucas and Anxious Lucas for the control of the Normal Lucas, ultimately ignoring and harming the Normal Lucas’ actual thoughts.
However, suddenly, as the piece arrives at the last bar, the story drops rapidly into a resolution. The normal Lucas overcomes the challenges and puts the battle to an end through his optimistic beliefs. In the middle of the last two letters “L” and “U,” there are two high notes, symbolizing the remains of the Anxious Lucas, however, the Anxious Lucas no long brings anxiety, but has rather became a part of the greater “Lucas.”
